Color! My first washes of red were pale imitations of the poppy’s skirt. Layering three separate reds (Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red and Permanent Rose) deepened and defined the poppy, yet left me frustrated with its hue. Finally I remembered two other reds I hadn’t yet added to my palette. Sandal Red and Primary Red (by Maimeri Blu, the fabulous Italian watercolor manufacturer) tipped the hue into wonderful, and I sang of the red poppy color for days.
